Unfortunately, teachers often encounter difficulties due to the lack of suitable songs for children. Although there are many songs, not all of them are appropriate for children. So what kind of songs are suitable for children?

Some time ago, we were all amazed by the appearance of a song titled “Laki-Laki Kardus” (Cardboard Boy) sung by some little children. The song later sparked controversy and eventually became one of the songs that was banned from circulation along with a few others. This shows that not all songs can be presented to children. This is because songs, fundamentally, are creations that contain knowledge and messages like writing.

To address the question of which songs are suitable for children, below are some characteristics of songs that are suitable for student consumption. The goal is to avoid choosing the wrong songs. Because the impact of such mistakes can greatly affect the psychological development of a child. There are several things to consider when choosing songs for children. Broadly speaking, they can be grouped into two categories: lyrics and melody.

First of all, when it comes to lyrics, choose songs with themes suitable forchildren. However, choose songs sung by children of the same age group, If possible. The themes of children’s songs are generally about love and care, whether towards God, parents, musketeers, creatures or other living beings. Other themes include nature, games, nationalism, fellowship and further.

Secondly, in terms of lyrical content, songs should be easy to understand linguistically. Prioritize the use of simple and direct language, avoiding tropological language, keeping the lyrics short and easy to study. reiteration of words or syllables is common and seductive to children. For example, the sound ‘dor’ in the song “Balonku” (My balloon), ‘tik-tik-tik’ in the song “Hujan” (Rain), ‘tuk-tik-tak-tik-tuk’ in the song “Naik Delman” (The horse-drawn carriage), ‘tut-tut-tut’ from the song “Naik Kereta Api” (Take the train) and imitations of stars or other objects are very popular among children.

Thirdly, in terms of melody, children’s songs are very simple and not too difficult. The range of notes should not be too wide or long, so that it is easy for children to sing. Note breaks from one note to another should not be too far apart. Typically, the vocal range should not exceed one octave. Songs with vocal ranges that are too wide can be difficult for children to sing.

Fourthly, we must choose children’s songs that have lively, happy, lively, delightful and lively warbles. Melancholic songs are generally not suitable for children because a caliginous and lukewarm atmosphere can affect children’s mood. Children need joy, energy, and spirit, so choose songs with upbeat, upbeat measures. Songs like” Pelangi”( Rainbow),” Naik Delman”( The steed- Drawn Carriage) and” Aku Anak Indonesia”( I Am an Indonesian Boy) are exemplifications of energetic, upbeat, happy and energetic songs.

Fifth, we must also pay attention to the tempo or speed of the song. We must choose songs with a tempo that adapts to the age or condition of the child. Songs that are too fast can be difficult for children to sing and memorize the lyrics. Likewise, songs that are too slow may not be as exciting.

Also, consider the child’s condition. Children who have speech or thinking delays may also have difficulty memorizing and singing. Therefore, choose songs that are very simple for children with these conditions.

Sixthly, something that must not be forgotten is that each song has a message or lesson. Some songs convey messages about cleanliness, friendship, love, and more. The song “Pelangi”, for example, introduces children to God and creation. The song “Becak” (Pedicaxi) encourages admiration for the hustle and bustle of the city and at the same time warns about road safety. The song “Kucingku Lucu” (My cute cat) advises us to love animals. Similarly, other songs convey moral messages.

All good songs will have one or more lessons for children to help shape their character. Therefore, teachers should choose songs with good messages that are appropriate to the child’s developmental values.

Seventh, choose songs with rhythms appropriate to the child’s development. Songs with dangdut, rock, reggae rhythms, for example, may not be suitable for the child’s stage of development. Although the lyrics may fall into the children’s category, the rhythm may not be developmentally appropriate for their age. Likewise, children’s songs with overly mature lyrics are also not suitable for children.

By understanding the character of songs, teachers can determine and choose songs that can be presented as part of children’s learning at school. Avoid presenting songs at random without careful selection. Especially if it is based solely on the teacher’s taste, which may not necessarily be right for the soul and development of the child.

It is hoped that this little knowledge will be beneficial and can serve as a reference for teachers, especially those who teach kindergarten and early childhood education, when choosing children’s songs.
