Tips for creating a reading terrace at home

One way to introduce books and reading activities to children is by setting up a reading terrace or veranda at home. The terrace or veranda is the front part of the house that is normally used for relaxing while gathering with family. Sometimes it is also used to chat with guests. So why not use the term “reading corner” but rather “reading terrace”? It is so that the reading space of the house can function as a terrace; a pleasant, welcoming and conducive place to share stories. In short, the terrace becomes a longed-for and loved place.

How do you create a reading terrace at home?

First of all, determine the location or space to use as a reading terrace. Try to separate it from the everyday play area that children use. This is so that when they enter the reading terrace, they can experience a new atmosphere and become more interested in enjoying the reading space.

Secondly, give the reading terrace a name that has a positive meaning, is easy to remember and pronounce. For example, “RAINBOW Reading Terrace” or “UNIVERSE Veranda”, etc.

Naming is important because it can stimulate children’s imagination before they enter the reading terrace. This naming may also be a way to introduce the existence of the reading terrace to the surrounding community. So, although the reading terrace belongs to you, the general public can also join the reading or use it.

Third, create attractive shelving that fits the space. Understand that the bookshelf is not just a place to put books; It works like a book house. Like a home, it should be comfortable and safe.

In addition, the bookshelf should contribute to the beauty of the reading terrace, making the children who look at it happy and comfortable. Also, provide colorful cushions and rugs or rugs. It is best not to have chairs as it is like sitting on the floor, but a reading table should still be provided.

Fourth, fill the reading deck with books that meet the needs of both children and adults. You can do this by observing the children’s interests. For example, some may like stories about plants, animals, outer space, airplanes, etc. Use the interests of all family members as information when purchasing books or adding them to the collection. Or it can also be adjusted to the social context of the community. For example, agriculture, fishing, maritime, commerce, etc.

Eventually, there should be accompanying conditioning. No matter how good the books are, they’re useless if they aren’t read. That’s why it’s necessary to carry out reciprocal conditioning to encourage children to read. This can be done through book scavenger hunts, where they answer questions set up in the books, or verbal mysteries whose answers are in the books. Another way is to read audibly, in an seductive and communicative way.
